Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 13

Founded May 1955

~ Serving Sport Aviation in the Detroit Area ~

WHO WE ARE

An organization formed for the purpose of encouraging, aiding and engaging in scientific research for the improvement and better understanding of aviation and to promote aviation education. People interested in building, flying, and maintaining all kinds of aircraft, from Homebuilts, to Classics, Antiques, Gyrocopters, Balloons, and Seaplanes. Planes made out of wood, tube, fabric, aluminum, or composites. We are interested in keeping the skies free and safe for us now, and for future generations.

The Detroit Chapter is the oldest and largest of the (40) Michigan Chapters with approximately 150+ active members. We celebrated our 52nd  Anniversary in May of 2007. Our members have numerous aircraft under construction, with many already built and flying. Our members have years of experience as builders and pilots.

The EAA International Organization encompasses over 150,000 members and is devoted to the promotion of sport aviation, assisting amateur aircraft builders and furthering the cause of the international aviation community. EAA and its members are involved in every facet of flying. A summer convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin that records an attendance of more than 750,000 and attracts 12,000 aircraft is held each year. The Fly-in Convention includes aircraft displays, educational forums, workshops and seminars covering the entire spectrum of aviation, an afternoon aerial performance, as well as a "fly" market.

WHAT WE DO

At our monthly meetings, we discuss news items that affect us as builders and pilots, we have a guest speaker or program, announcements of items to buy/sell, aircraft progress reports, coffee & donuts, and a raffle. And, of course, there is plenty of great Hangar Flying. A large free book and video library is available for our members to use. We also participate in the Young Eagles Program, sponsor safety seminars, and have pancake breakfasts during the year.

WHERE & WHEN

Our meetings are held the 1st Thursday of the month at Ray Community Airport.  Meeting time is 7:30 pm to 10 pm.  There is a pre-meeting Bar-B-Q at 6 pm.  Come early, set up the meeting room and have a hot dog.  Late in the year we have a banquet dinner to present awards for our builder's first flights.  There is no August meeting because most of our members are at the International Convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  Our July meeting is usually a Fly-in Saturday picnic for family and friends at Ray Community Airport (formerly New Haven Macomb Airport).  We have Young Eagles events and safety seminars scheduled throughout the year. Occasionally we have a Field Trip on meeting nights, so check ahead by calling Rex Phelps at 586.918.3838

New Chaper 13 Hanger

In February 2008, Chapter 13 held our first meeting in our newly renovated hanger. Although not complete yet, one of the goals of the chapter to have its own meeting place has become a reality.  The weather was not the best, but about 60 members braved the cold and snow to attend.

Presently we are planning a Grand Opening at the June meeting. By then we feel most of the squawks will have been taken care of  - plus it will be warm. Something we are all ready for. This will be a very special meeting so we want as many members as possible to attend for a celebration and group photo.

Some of the items still needing attention are: Completion of the bathroom, sealing up the new bi-fold hanger door, painting the roof, pouring a cement approach ramp, giving some of the walls another coat of paint, adding an entrance awning, and other tasks to improve the functionality of the hanger.

We have had a great chapter workforce, with many individuals stepping forth with their skills to produce a beautiful meeting place.  At the last board meeting it was decided to suspend the "every Saturday” work day until warmer weather sets in. But don’t put away those tools just yet, because weather permitting we will be on the phone organizing the next work party.

Thank you.  Bob Hunt and Dick Green – Hanger Renovation Co-chairman.
